Our base in Almuñécar is only just over an hours
drive from the main
skiing slopes of Sol y Nieve in the Sierra Nevada.
Here we offer skiing and snow boarding in the winter season. The
resort, based around the village of Pradollano (2100m), is the most
southerly ski resort in Europe and ranges from a high spot of around 3400m
to a lower limit of around the 2000m mark. When the weather is clear
you can see straight over the Mediterranean to the mountains of the Rift
Valley in Africa!
Sol y Nieve successfully hosted the 1996 World Ski
Championships and can offer a long season from early December through to
early May if the snow gods smile, with enough to keep intermediates happy on
102 km of pistes for quite a few days.
There are around 120 marked pistes: 18 green, 40 blue, 50 red and 8 blacks, served by a good network of lifts - click for piste map.
From our base here in Almuñécar we adopt a "hit & run" philosophy, checking the conditions, web cams and snow reports for Sierra Nevada in advance and flexing the days we go up to get the best of the conditions while avoiding the weekend queues & traffic.
And, before you ask, yes - it is possible to ski in the morning and to sun bathe on the beach in the afternoon!
