Evening - Welcome meeting in beach bar & evening mini-tour of Almuñécar to get you orientated - Sunday - Sierra Almijara - Self guided walk in the Sierra Almijara natural park. Drop off at some 1062m alt in the dramatic scenery of the park. We then descend passing old mills, cortijos and streams where we can stop for refreshment. Further on we pass through the village of Lentegi, where we can stop for tapas then down through the avocado, nispero and mango orchards to Otivar. Here we can have lunch at a restaurant famous for its chicken dishes before pick up and return to Almuñécar. Approx. 12km and 3.5 hrs walking. Alternatively, if a lift back is not rqd, the return walk follows the Rio Verde valley and is a further 11km downhill to the coast.
- Monday - Today we meet up with your guide then it's off to the Axarquia for a fabulous days guided walk. Your guided has an in depth knowledge of all the local fauna & flora as well as the historic sites you will pass on your way. Today is approx 5 - 6 hrs of walking, with a stop for a packed lunch (supplied) along the way. Walking pole recommended, with some steep sections (though route will be tailored to groups abilities).
- Tuesday - Las Alpujarras. Today we whisk you off up into Las Alpujarras for a fantastic days walking in the Pampaneira vicinity, with it's ancient Moorish architecture. Slightly more challenging than the Axarquia walk, with ascents / descents up to 1000m, so you should be used to walking / cycling and be reasonably fit to get the best out of this day. Our usual route takes you from Pampaneira to Pitres and is a diverse and interesting walk, with some steep stairs, some tame forest tracks and a bit of rough cross country walking as well. Approx 5hrs walking.
Evening - Tapas trail of Almuñécar old town, where we explore the old town sampling tapas and local wines. - Wednesday - Free day - See Extras for optional extra activities / excursions. Our day excursion to Granada and the fabulous Alhambra palace is a favourite, or explore the surrounding area with our local short stroll route notes and maps (e.g. 5km circular walk to the Roman Bridge at Cotobro, which starts along a beautiful palm tree lined paseo, before heading inland to cross a bamboo, wild rhododendron and olive lined valley via a small Roman bridge). Relax on the beach or take a spa session.
- Thursday - Today we're off up to a different part of Sierra de Almijara for a guided days walking in the spectacular area known as Junta de los Rios where we get the chance to explore some gorges. Here we pass through some areas of outstanding natural beauty, often spotting Cabra Montés (Spanish Ibex), wild deer, Bonelli’s Eagle & a variety of raptors such as sparrow hawks. Wild flowers, depending on season, are found along with Pino Carrasco (Kermes oak), Thyme, Rosemary, Olive, Almonds, a variety of pine and various succulents such as Prickly pear, Aloe and Agave cactus. Here we have an opportunity to refresh in crystal clear pools, and see natural waterfalls and a myriad rock pools while enjoying a picnic lunch (inc.). Approx 4 hrs walking and poles recommended.
Evening - Meet up for early evening tapas, then join us for a fun filled Paella night at a beach side chiringuito - Friday - After breakfast it's a coastal walk from Almuñécar to neighbouring Salobreña with its Moorish castle overlooking the sea. This walk takes us along the beaches and paseos of Almuñécar & Taramay, before following the chain of ancient Atalayas (Watchtowers) along the coastal mule tracks, passing through a small sea side village en route. Often on this walk we spot dolphins just off the coast, especially near an off shore fish farm. Packed lunch & transport back from Salobreña included. A nice walk, with only one steep section of around 500m or so (which is a descent over a bit of terracing). Approx 5.5 hrs walking, plus time to explore Salobreña before return transfer.
