Walking holiday routes around Almuñécar, Andalucia, Spain

Local walking in and around Almuñécar in Andalucia,

A series of local walking holiday routes based in & around Almuñécar for those who wish to explore the coastal region of Andalucia with it's delightful coves & bays, Moorish castles & ancient towers patiently watching for any sign of invasion from the sea.  Or, slightly further inland, you can hike along the adjacent hills through almond and avocado groves with exquisite views of the white villages typical of Andalucia in the valleys below.

Short holiday walking routes along the coast in Andalucia...

Popular short walking routes for your holiday include a 5km circular walk to the Roman Bridge at Cotobro, which starts along a beautiful palm tree lined paseo (sea front) with beach bars, before heading inland to cross a bamboo, wild rhododendron and olive lined valley via a small Roman bridge.  The bridge has been excavated recently and is fully visible, with its cobbled surface & drainage system mostly intact.  Other short trips chosen to make the best of your walking holiday include walks to view the extensive Roman aqueducts that this part of Andalucia is famed for - or you can simply stroll along some 6km of palm lined promenades (or Paseos) alongside the glittering blue sea.

Slightly longer are a series of two linked walking routes that follow a coastal path from Almuñécar to the neighbouring town of Salobreña with its spectacular cliff top castle.  This walk takes you along cliff top paths past ancient look out towers perched on headlands.  Sections of the path overlook bays where often dolphins can be seen close to the shore, before descending to cross sugar cane plantations.

...or longer walking routes in the sierras

Or we can offer, for the more energetic, day walks in the hills overlooking Almuñécar where you climb to around 600m to enjoy truly spectacular views to the Sierra Nevada foothills, as well as along the coast for miles.  On these walks through avocado, olive and almond groves you will see the best of Andalucía's renowned natural wildlife, often glimpsing Bonelli's eagles, as well as a variety of other smaller predatory birds, as well as mountain goat.  Equally spectacular are the bright yellow wagtails, but you need very sharp eyes to spot the chameleons which live there too!  Our ridge route takes you to neighbouring Itrabo, in which case transport to the start location (if rqd) is given, plus a picnic lunch to enjoy en route, as well as collection later that day.

Walking & hiking in Las Alpujarras

Walking in Las Alpujarras is a fantastic way to explore the white villages (Pueblos Blancos) and historic architecture made famous in boos such as Driving over lemons.
