Walking Holidays in the Axarquia, Andalucia Spain

Our walking holiday program in the neighbouring area of The AxarquiaSmall cove near Cantarrijan beach offers a wide range of guided walks, or we can supply all the maps and guide books necessary for the independent walker, transporting you to and from suitable start and finish points as necessary.

Coastal walking in the Axarquia

The walking and hiking in the Axarquia typically splits into two main divides: Coastal, where you can follow the ancient costal paths and ways which link the network of watchtowers (Atalayas) which are a legacy of the Roman & moorish times.  On these you will discover old fishermen's tracks, as well as hidden coves accessible only by foot or by sea.

Walking in Sierras Tejeda & Almijara, Axarquia

Alternatively the inland sierras of the Axarquia offer fine routes for exploring Canuelo walk - beach at edge of Cantarrijanthe higher ground.  The natural park is some 40,662 hectares of designated natural park, rising from a low point of 300m to Pico de Maroma at 2,065m. The three sierras connect (to the west) the hills of el Campo de Gibralter with (to the east) the Contraviesa & Sierras Beticas.  Here you will passing through olive groves, before rising through almonds slightly higher.  The views here are superb - miles and miles inland with only the occasional white village clinging like sugar cubes to the hill sides, while to the south a line of distant clouds across the sparkling Mediterranean mark the African coastline.

We can only quote Charles Davies "The Axarquia is one of the world's great places, and among the greatest places within it are the Sierras Tejeda and Almijara, which form the backbone of both of the region and the present publication.  Blessed with high summits, dizzying pinnacles, dramatic crags, deep ravines, dozens of springs, delightful rivers and the best coves on the Costa del Sol, this is an area that has something for everyone".

Walking holidays in Los Alpujarras

We also offer a range of Walking holidays in Las Alpujarras, which are a great way to explore the white villages (Pueblos Blancos) and historic architecture of the Sierra Nevada foothills.
