Jazz En La Costa 2016

Held every year in Majuelo Park, in the shadow of the Castle, this is a superb night out, with some fantastic music.  Originally started in 1998, this has grown each year to become one of the key dates in the jazz calender.

Part of the Granada International Jazz Festival,  these form a week long series of events and concerts held on the coast, with Almunecar’s Jazz En La Costa being the prime series of gigs, attracting world class musicians and singers.

Ticket Sales

Tickets are again available on-line through Ticketmaster this year, and NB that returns are limited on the door from an hour before each concert so advance purchase is highly recommended to avoid being disappointed.  Local agencies here in Almunecar are: Viajes Ecuador. Paseo del Altillo, 2 and Halcón Viajes: Calle Madrid, 1 – other agencies in Granada, Antequera, Fuengirola, Estepona, Marbella & Malaga are listed on the main Jazz En La Costa site.

Prices are 18 euros (internet) – 18.50( agency or phone bookings) per concert.  A limited number of Abonos, or series discount tickets, are available at 95 euros for all 7 concerts which also includes a CD entitled “Cinema Jazz” – The Granada Film Project de Michael Mossman Band.

New this year is a Spotify page with samples of all the performer’s tunes, so if in doubt as to whether the band in question is to your taste or not this may be a good place to start.

San Isidro Romeria Almunecar 2016 – Update

San Isidro Almunecar 2016

As forecast today was a lovely warm 21 to 22 and sunny all day for the San Isidro Romeria.  The procession left the temple after the Mass, and was in full swing by 11:00 with a steady stream of pilgrims following the ox cart and effigy to make the trip up Rio Verde to Torrecuevas.

The new route seemed to work very well, especially as town was very busy with the Sunday Market as well.  Very nice to see was the increased numbers, with this some 40 decorated carriages and many more riders accompanying them this year (another dozen or so joined in from around the Carbonell’s area after the photos were taken).

Diving Seminar May 2016

13 to 15 May this year sees an important date for all the diving community.  Equilbriomarino are hosting an open conference and “get together” to address conservation, pollution and all matters of concern to the underwater community – as well as to enjoy some of the best diving for over 100km in any direction..

Almunecar – Romeria de San Isidro 2016

Romeria de San Isidro

Local Romerias and pilgrimages are always pretty spectacular, and our local San Isidrio is gathering pace after a quieter period.  15th May this year will see the fifth Romeria de San Isidro taking place.  This custom has been recently resurrected here in Almunecar, and has grown each year in attendance and popularity, with colourful flamenco dresses and, of course, horses & riders in traditional clothing.

This year the first part of the route has been slightly revised, so that the crossing of the A340 will be more controlled and easier for both the procession, and motorists.  As before proceedings will start, after Mass, from La Iglesia del Salvador at 09:30 with the procession ending at Torrecuevas.

San Isidro (now the Catholic saint of farmers) was born in Madrid around 1070 and died 15 May 1130.  He was a humble farm worker and was well known for his good works and support of the local poor and animals.  Religous parades and pilgrimages (Romerias) are held in his honour and are especially prevalent in Andalucia, with those in Malaga province being particularly large and well supported.

Almunecar – Romeria San Isidro 2016

The planned route is as follows: (09:30) Iglesia del Salvador (P4), Calle Tetuan, Mariana Pineda, Avenida Rey Juan Carlos I, Carrera de la Concepción, Carretera Suspiro del Moro, Calle Molvízar, Camino de la Vega Prmera, then down to Rio Verde.

14/05: Latest news is that the organisers are expecting some 40 odd decorated carriages along with around 30 horses, so this is shaping up really well.

The procession then follows up Rio Verde, to end underneath the Roman Aquaduct where the other pilgrims will gather.

In order to ensure a smooth running of the day, most of the local authorities have been involved in the planning and will be supporting the procession, including the  Policía Local , Protección Civil and the Bomberos de Almuñécar.   Trafico have also been enlisted to control traffic on the A340 where the procession will cross by the traffic lights, close to the Repsol petrol station.
