From Friday 26th to Sunday 18th June it’s the first annual tropical fruit days in La Herradura. Selected restaurants will be offering special menus /dishes featuring some of our local tropical fruits for just €7 a dish.
Once again its the annual Cruces de Mayo, or the May Crosses. This year they’re being exhibited from Sunday 30th April through to Wednesday 3rd May, with judging being started on 30th from 19:00 onwards.
Each cross will be awarded up to 5 points in each of the following categories: Decoration of the cross itself, variety & selection of flowers, lighting, surroundings, display of local / traditional gastronomy and overall originality, with a special children’s category as well.
As every year there are limits on the times for music, with hours being generally Sunday 12:00 – 18:00 and 20:00 – 02:00. Monday & Tuesday 12:00 – 18:00 and 20:00 – 02:00 ad finally Wednesday from 12:00 – 22:00.
As much a demonstration of pagan tradition as it is of Christian faith the origins of Cruces De Mayo are rooted in a confusion of legend and folklore. For full information on the meaning and history of the May Crosses please see our dedicated meaning of Cruces de Mayo post.

Chiringuito Bambu Wins!
Congratulations to Chiringuito Bambu for winning the La Herradura “Ruta de Tortilla” competition for the best tortilla.
It’s always a bit of a wonder how classic tortillas, using just potatoes, onions, eggs & olive oil , can vary so much. The amount of sweetness is governed by the cooking and caramelisation of the onions, for example. Often served lukewarm with Ali Oli, a thick home made garlic mayonnaise – or eaten as the filing for a bocadillo – they are always welcome on the table.
Bambu successfully beat off competition from 16 other local restaurants and scooped up awards from the deputy mayor, Juan Jose Ruiz Joya, for “Best tortilla”, “Best attention and service” and “Most original”. The winning tortilla will feature as next Saturdays tapa when you buy a drink there.
San Jose Fiesta 2016
A bit late off the mark, but the translation into English of the itinerary for this year’s Fiesta in honour of San Jose, the patron saint for La Herradura, is below. The fiesta runs for four days from Thursday 17th to Sunday 20th March.
We will once again be supporting the Corrida de Cintas a Caballo held on Playa del Carbón on Saturday (which Google has translated as ” Tape Run Horse. Coal beach.”!).
This is an annual favourite where local riders compete for, usually, a jamon by trying to spear spooled ribbons suspended on a wire over the beach. Sharp eyes will detect the cheats using their fingers instead of the small wooden sticks provided…
Other events well worth attending are the police dog & falconry displays as well as the firework show by local maestro Martin of Motril. Many of the dances and processions will be accompanied by locals in full flamenco regalia, so this can usually be a opportunity traditional costumes.
The full itineraries are below – or you can download as a PDF from the local fiesta details page on the activity holidays web site.

A new initiative has started to promote the area for diving, with a meeting between local councillor, Rafael Caballero, and representatives of the diving industry.
The initial meeting was held with dive clubs in La Herradura in order to start work promoting this sector of nautical tourism, to raise it’s importance and to ensure it is represented in the promotional calendar for 2016.
A promotional video is also being prepared in conjunction with local dive centres, with a view to screening it at travel and tourism trade shows and on the internet. This can only help raise the profile of the local area, boasting as it does some of the best diving sites for a long way (every day we get the diving schools from as far afield as Marbella, Fuengirola & Benalmadena travelling over 100km to dive here).
2016 Dive Shows
It is planned to kick start the promotions in Jan 2016 at the FITUR show, also promoting the news that La Herradura has again been chosen to host the European Underwater Photography Championship in October 2016. Snr Caballero continued that the Tourist Board will also make one of the areas or rooms in that tourism fair available for the presentation of this international event.
It was also announced that in February 2016, there are plans to participate in the Dive Travel Show exhibition in Madrid with a stand. It is intended to also showcase the local area and gastronomy, as well as the larger cultural aspects of the area. The fair is for dive professionals and is held in the “Crystal Palace” in the capital city, Madrid. In 2014 the fair featured some 110 exhibitors and attracted more than 12,000 visitors.
New local area SCUBA Diving guide
Finally, it was also announced that a dedicated guide book for local diving will be produced, detailing the local sites, access points, technical notes, expected durations etc. The guide will also feature a section featuring the wealth of fauna and flora that can be expected to be seen at each site. This is especially good news as some of our best sites are within the Cerro Gordo – Maro conservation area and boast superb soft corals, etc.
It is envisaged that this manual will also be able to be used as promotional material in other exhibitions and dive fairs. Let’s hope that, for once, the guide is produced in languages such as English, German, Danish, etc so it is useful for our international visitors.
Next week’s “big ticket” event running from Tuesday 24th to Saturday 28th November is the 31st annual International Classical Guitar Competition “Andres Segovia” next door in La Herradura.
