ISO 14001 Award
Five local beaches that have obtained the coveted ISO 14001 rating – Playas Cantarriján, La Herradura, San Cristóbal, Puerta del Mar and Velilla. Out of the five, La Herradura, San Cristóbal, Puerta del Mar and Velilla are the only urban beaches in the province with this certification according to Daniel Barbero, the town hall delegate for tourism and beaches.
ISO 14001 defines an international standard that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system. While not actually defining environmental performance requirements it does specify an organisational framework that a municipality or beach administration authority can follow.
Blue Flag Award
The ISO14001 awards awards are joined by Playas San Cristóbal, Velilla and Puerta de Mar also gaining the Blue Flag award.
The Blue Flags have been awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) to beaches and ports for more than 30 years (1987). It is granted, after ADEAC’s annual inspections and audits, to beaches that meet a series of four criteria: Environmental Information and Education, Water Quality, Environmental Management and Security and Services.
