2018 – 31st Jazz En La Costa

31st Annual Jazz En La Costa

The dates are now confirmed for this years “Jazz en la Costa” series of gigs in and around Majuelo park – Tue 17th to Sun 22nd July.  As always, early booking of tickets is absolutely vital as the main events always sell out weeks in advance.

  • 17 July Cecile Mclorin Salvant
  • 18 July Mike Stern & Randy Brecker Band
  • 19 July Fred Hersch Trio
  • 20 July Robin McKelle
  • 21 July Kurt Elling Quintet
  • 22 July Paolo Fresu Devil Quartet & Chano Dominguez

There are usually a series of “fringe” concerts as well in and around the town during this week.

All the concerts are well worth attending, as the setting in the open air in the shadow of the Castillo de San Miguel, next door to the Roman ruins, is truly magical.  The concerts normally start at a civilised 22:30 in the evening, so there is time for a meal before taking your seats.
Full details of each act can be found on the official website, along with links to videos and recordings to help you choose who to see.  Tickets per gig are priced at €18 advance, or €19.50 on the door – or you can buy a “bono” for all the sessions at €91.50.

VII Romería de San Isidro

This Sunday, 20th May, sees the annual Romeria de San Isidro.  Now 7 years on, after being “restarted” this is now a permanent fixture and a great spectacle to see – or, of course by joining in on foot or horseback.

San Isidro (now the Catholic saint of farmers) was born in Madrid around 1070 and died 15 May 1130.  He was a humble farm worker and was well known for his good works and support of the local poor and animals.  Religous parades and pilgrimages (Romerias) are held in his honour and are especially prevalent in Andalucia, with those in Malaga province being particularly large and well supported.

It all starts around 09:00 at Iglesia de el Salvador in P4 with a mass.  After the mass the procession will leave and head via Tetuán, Mariana Pineda, Rontoda de Andalucía, Avenida Rey Juan Carlos I, Carrera de la Concepción, Carretera Suspiro del Moro, Calle Molvízar, Camino de la Vega Primera, before dropping into Rio Verde and heading up to Torrecuevas for the serious partying.

May – June 2018 Cultural Agenda

This month we’ve got a double whammy for some reason from the Casa de Cultura, as they’ve issued a combined agenda for both May & June:

Loads to do and see as always, with theater, classical, a week long series of Nordic music recitals, piano concerts, as well as an open air jazz concert underneath the roman aqueducts in June.

As always “double click” on the image and you can download it to your phone to refer as and when you want.

Cruces de Mayo 2018

The annual “Cruces de Mayo” or May Crosses competition starts today, 3rd May.

All the Crosses for this year’s Competition will be displayed from 16:00 on Thursday 3rd until 18:00 on Sunday 6th May.

The daily times this year have an end time of 02:00 apart from Sunday 6th which is 18:00.  Music can only played from 12:00 to 18:00 and from 20:00 to 02:00 on the 4th and 5th,

from 16:00 to 02:00 on 3rd, and 12:00  to 18:00 on Sunday 6th.

The judging will take place from 19:00 on Thursday 3rd

As much a demonstration of pagan tradition as it is of Christian faith the origins of Cruces De Mayo are rooted in a confusion of legend and folklore.  For full information on the meaning and history of the May Crosses please see our dedicated meaning of Cruces de Mayo post.

The official entrants this year are as follows, but n.b. there are usually quite a few “fringe” ones as well, as local children often make small Crosses in the manner of “penny for the guy” in the UK.
