Romeria de San Isidro
Local Romerias and pilgrimages are always pretty spectacular, and our local San Isidrio is gathering pace after a quieter period. 15th May this year will see the fifth Romeria de San Isidro taking place. This custom has been recently resurrected here in Almunecar, and has grown each year in attendance and popularity, with colourful flamenco dresses and, of course, horses & riders in traditional clothing.
This year the first part of the route has been slightly revised, so that the crossing of the A340 will be more controlled and easier for both the procession, and motorists. As before proceedings will start, after Mass, from La Iglesia del Salvador at 09:30 with the procession ending at Torrecuevas.
San Isidro (now the Catholic saint of farmers) was born in Madrid around 1070 and died 15 May 1130. He was a humble farm worker and was well known for his good works and support of the local poor and animals. Religous parades and pilgrimages (Romerias) are held in his honour and are especially prevalent in Andalucia, with those in Malaga province being particularly large and well supported.

The planned route is as follows: (09:30) Iglesia del Salvador (P4), Calle Tetuan, Mariana Pineda, Avenida Rey Juan Carlos I, Carrera de la Concepción, Carretera Suspiro del Moro, Calle Molvízar, Camino de la Vega Prmera, then down to Rio Verde.
14/05: Latest news is that the organisers are expecting some 40 odd decorated carriages along with around 30 horses, so this is shaping up really well.
The procession then follows up Rio Verde, to end underneath the Roman Aquaduct where the other pilgrims will gather.
In order to ensure a smooth running of the day, most of the local authorities have been involved in the planning and will be supporting the procession, including the Policía Local , Protección Civil and the Bomberos de Almuñécar. Trafico have also been enlisted to control traffic on the A340 where the procession will cross by the traffic lights, close to the Repsol petrol station.
